The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) traces its origins to the American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs (AZCPA), which was established in 1954 by Isaiah L. Kenen, a lobbyist for the Israeli government, partly in response to international condemnation of Israel’s attack on the Arab village of Qibya. The organization was initially formed as a lobbying arm separate from the American Zionist Council due to restrictions on its non-profit status. It operated under the name AZCPA until 1959, when it was renamed AIPAC to broaden its appeal and enlarge its constituency.
