I have two hard copies of this book in my personal library ever since it first came out. Word of advice: There is a lot of gold nuggets in this book but if you go digging through it piece meal you will miss alot. Do a complete slow read through first and digest the information, then go back and cherry pick. Example: The author goes into exacting detail on how the IRA did hits (assassinations). Planning, logistics, weapons, all of it. Pay close attention to the post-op explanation minutia and you will see WHY the British had such a piss poor record (forensically) in catching IRA hit teams early on.

PIRA ASU
I. Sniper Cell
1) Cell Leader
- Receives the green light from superiors
- Establishes the method and specific target; compartmentalizes leadership from cells actions
- Looks over intel reports and chooses target
- Takes the tac team personally on pre-mission recon
- arranges for the conditions to be optimal for assault element
2) Shooter
- Needs to know target type, composition, numbers, direction of travel
- Zeros in/trains with weapon but (otherwise) leaves it in the possession of QM
- Needs to ingrain the rapid assembly/disassembly of weapon, pre and post-task counter forensics, and coordination with spotter (surveillance man) in addition to being an accomplished shot from unconventional FFPs.
3) Tac Leader
- Oversees execution of a mission
- Orchestrates the actions of the shooter, QM and surveillance man for the given assignment
4) Quartermaster
- Provides all the necessary logistics for the mission.
- Is the bagman for the weapons/gear to be used by the shooter/team.
5) Surveillance Man
Precautions:
A) Cell leader gets order from unit leaders but determines how the job gets done.
B) Organizes team members and rallies them to pre-selected spot but uses a code during all non-face to face commo
C) In order to maximize OpSec, members from different cells may be assembled into a team for a given job.
- Would require standardized training so that each member of a cell could operate for their assigned task
D) Practices counter surveillance/shadowing SOP (varying routes, modes of transportation, etc) to detect any tail and will not show up to meeting if any shadowers are detected
E) Switch meeting places each time.
F) Takes a series of side streets and unpredictable turns en route to area to be scouted
G) Assembles just hours prior to a mission to prevent the possibility of a leak
H) Strict separation of intel collection units from ASUs. Former provides latter with a package of possible targets and allows team leader to choose.
I) Partial understanding of overall plan reduces any damage resulting from any resulting interrogation of captured members, snitches, etc.
